Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli : The battle

Rivalries are never good and when you have rivals in the same team then things can really go haywire. But for team India, one duel which is really helping its cause is the one which is taking place between Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina. The two promising youngsters are playing the game of upmanship with each other in such a healthy way that it has ensured that their game transcends to a different level.

If one takes out the age gap away both Raina and Kohli have had almost similar sort of journey with the Indian team. Both of them scored heavily in the U-19 world cups to stake their respective claims for the senior team. While Raina did so in 2004 Virat kohli emulated him in 2008.Although,Kohli has been a regular with the Indian ODI team since his debut in 2008 ,barring a 5 match series against Sri Lanka, thanks to his match winning century against the same oppostion in November,Raina had to struggle in his initial years. He made his debut in 2005 but kept on coming in and going out of the team in spite of impressing one and all with his flair and exuberance. It was only after a strong first season of Indian Premier League in 2008 that he earned his place back for a triangular series in Bangladesh. In the ensuing Asia cup he scored his maiden One Day International century against Hongkong and has never looked back since.

Considering the healthy competition between the two it’s no wonder that Suresh Raina has only started getting better since the arrival of Virat Kohli. He has scored runs at an average of close to 39 against his carreer average of 34 in the last two years,a clear indication that he has started backing his talent with application.Virat Kohli too has been going from strength to strength.Infact he performing so incredibly in the run up to World Cup that there was no place for Raina in the starting line up when India started their campaign. He only had to wait till the quarterfinal stage and but the south paw made the most of it steering the team to victory along with Yuvraj Singh.Even in the next match against Pakistan he made a valuable 30 odd runs towards the end guiding India to a respectable total after a middle order collapse.Virat too had done his bit in the competition scoring a century on his world cup debut against Bangladesh and then a half century against West Indies.

Whereas their were other more notable performances in the World Cup the subtle battle between the right hander and the south paw too did its bit in India winning the silverware in the end.One of the dictionary meaning of rivalry means “to compete or to emulate”.Fortunately for team India there is a very healthy rivalry brewing between two of its most promising youngsters namely Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina and these guys are not just competing but they emulates each other’s good form especially when the other one suffers from a “bad day” syndrome. So while Kohli made up for Raina’s lapses in the One day Internationals, the latter

returned the favour in the first innings of the ongoing test match scoring a fluent 82 after Virat was dismissed cheaply.Things really hot up when both of them perform together and I have absolutely no doubt that Suresh raina and Virat Kohli with the abundance of talent they possess will be the torch bearers for India in their quest for supremacy
